This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, hold, use and disclose personal information in the course of operating our legal practice, including through our website (alag.au) and our other client and business dealings. Personal information means any information or opinion about an identified individual, or an individual who is reasonably identifiable, whether true or not and whether recorded in material form or not.

By providing personal information to us, you consent to us collecting, holding, using and disclosing it in accordance with this Policy. We may update this Policy from time to time by posting a revised version on our website, and we encourage you to check it periodically.

Types of personal information we collect

The personal information we collect about you may include:

  • name and title;

  • mailing or street address;

  • email address and telephone number;

  • organisation, role and professional details;

  • date of birth and identification details, where required for client or matter verification;

  • billing and payment information;

  • information about your business, investment or superannuation circumstances relevant to a matter;

  • information provided in connection with enquiries, meetings or correspondence with us; and

  • your device identity and type, IP address, and standard web log and usage information collected through our website.

Where a matter reasonably requires it — for example, certain superannuation or regulatory engagements — we may collect sensitive information. We only do so where it is reasonably necessary for the matter, where you have consented, or where we are otherwise permitted or required by law.

How we collect personal information

We collect personal information directly from you wherever practicable, including where you:

  • contact us through our website or by email, telephone or post;

  • engage us to act on a matter, or provide instructions in connection with a matter;

  • communicate with us via LinkedIn or other professional or social platforms; or

  • attend meetings or calls with us.

We may also collect personal information from third parties in the course of a matter, including counterparties, other professional advisers, regulators, or publicly available sources such as corporate and regulatory registers, where this is reasonably necessary to carry out your instructions.

We may collect information when you use our website through web analytics tools, cookies, or similar tracking technologies, which allow us to understand website usage. Cookies are small files stored on your device that let us recognise repeat visits. You can disable cookies through your browser settings if you prefer not to have this information collected.

How we use and disclose personal information

We collect and use personal information for the following purposes:

  • to respond to enquiries and provide advice across our practice areas, including Investments & Transactions, Superannuation & Regulatory, and Corporate & Governance matters;

  • to manage client engagements, including onboarding, conflict checks, billing and file administration;

  • to provide information about you to counterparties, co-counsel, regulators, or service providers where reasonably necessary to carry out a matter;

  • to comply with our professional, legal and regulatory obligations, including under the Legal Profession Uniform Law;

  • to operate, maintain and improve our website; and

  • to send firm updates, insights or marketing communications, where you have not opted out. You can opt out at any time using the unsubscribe facility provided or by contacting us directly.

We do not sell personal information to third parties. Given the cross-border nature of parts of our practice — including engagements connected to the United Arab Emirates and the CIS region — personal information may be disclosed to overseas counterparties, correspondent advisers, regulators, or cloud and technology service providers located outside Australia. Where we do so, we take reasonable steps to ensure the overseas recipient handles the information consistently with the APPs.

Security

We take reasonable steps to protect personal information from misuse, interference, loss, and unauthorised access, modification or disclosure. Our systems, including our practice management and Microsoft 365 environments, are access-controlled and password protected. While we take security seriously, no system can be guaranteed completely secure, and we cannot warrant the absolute security of information transmitted to us.

We retain personal information only for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes described in this Policy, or as required by our professional and legal obligations, including applicable file retention requirements for legal practices.
